National Initiatives
Recognizing the specific nature of European health care systems and their differing requirements, IHE-Europe encourages the setting up of IHE Initiatives at the national or regional level.
Europe today counts national initiatives in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Turkey, and the United Kingdom.
A national IHE initiative promotes, supports and implements IHE activities within the respective country, and often at the regional level within the country. National IHE initiatives also assume the responsibility to represent the needs and requirements of their respective health care systems within activities of IHE-Europe.

The idea of forming IHE Austria was initiated by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health, Family and Youth and by the "Task Force ELGA", the organization responsible for implementing the national EHR in Austria.
Target of this association is the support for the technical implementation of the national EHR project ELGA ("Elektronische Gesundheitsakte Austria") and other eHealth projects for increasing quality, effectiveness and efficiency of healthcare in Austria.

IHE-Deutschland (IHE-D) is a registered association in Germany ("eingetragener Verein" - e.V.) made up of both individual and corporate members.
Caretakers are appointed for the domains of ITI, Cardiology, Laboratory and Radiology, which are the key areas of interest for members. In addition to leading work in their respective domains, caretakers coordinate with other working groups as required.
